TheIndonesia.id - The Mayor of Medan, North Sumatra, Bobby Nasution agreed to manage waste to become a provider of solid fuel for "cofiring" the Steam Power Plant (PLTU) at PT PLN (Persero). Medan, the third-largest city in Indonesia, produces more than 2,000 tons of waste daily.

"We are open to anyone who wants to contribute to waste management. Currently, we are trying to change the waste management system from 'open dumping' to 'sanitary landfill'," Nasution said in a written statement in Medan, Monday, March 28, 2022.

An agreement between Medan City Government and PT PLN (Persero) on the Research and Development of Waste Management into Solid Fuel has been sealed on Monday. This mutual agreement was signed by the Mayor of Medan Bobby Nasution and the General Manager of PT PLN (Persero) North Sumatra Power Generation Unit Purnomo.

The mayor admitted the purpose of holding a research and development cooperation in waste management is mutually beneficial, both for the Medan City Government and PT PLN (Persero). "In the text of the agreement, PT PLN has carried out a 'cofiring' trial with a maximum percentage of five percent mixing biomass in the form of solid fuel and coal. Then continued continuous operations," he explained.

The Medan City Government has a source of raw material for solid fuel, including the production of more than 2,000 tons of waste per day. "In accelerating the target of the national energy mix, the Medan City Government and PT PLN have agreed to cooperate in research and development of waste management into solid fuel," said the Mayor of Medan.

General Manager of PLTU Pangkalan Susu, Trisno Widayat, admitted that PLN is interested in managing waste at Final Disposal Site (TPA) Terjun in Medan Marelan into fuel. "With the Pangkalan Susu PLTU, we can use the waste in the TPA Terjun," Trisno said earlier this year.
