Javan Leopard Conservation: Bring Ecotourism and Economic Opportunities

TheIndonesia.co - Satyawan Pudyatmoko, the Director General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE) at Indonesia's Forestry Ministry, highlighted that Javan leopard conservation initiatives could provide valuable benefits to surrounding communities, including ecotourism opportunities.

According to Antara News Agency, speaking during a presentation on the development of the Javan Leopard Population Survey at the Jakarta event on Tuesday, Pudyatmoko explained that communities near conservation areas could gain significantly from such efforts.

He cited the example of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, where local communities have already participated in ecotourism. “When local communities experience the benefits directly, they will naturally support conservation efforts. The leopard can also have significant economic potential if we manage and develop it properly,” he noted.

Pudyatmoko emphasized that strategic planning is crucial for ensuring the sustainable growth of wildlife populations, especially since these conservation efforts could stimulate wildlife tourism, allowing people to safely observe animals in their natural habitats.

"This type of wildlife tourism not only has financial benefits but also contributes to a healthier ecosystem. It can reduce risks such as flooding, water shortages, and drought. Ultimately, the benefits extend beyond just money, as it supports a balanced and thriving environment for everyone," he added.

Earlier, a joint survey by the ministry and the Indonesia SINTAS Foundation revealed the population of the Javan leopard across six out of seven landscapes under study. The survey, which started last year, is planned to run for two years.
