Indonesia’s Minister of Law and Human Rights (Menkumham) Yasonna Hamonangan Laoly launches citizenship and immigration services to Indonesian diaspora in the United States

TheIndonesia.id - Indonesia Minister of Law and Human Rights (Menkumham) Yasonna Hamonangan Laoly launches citizenship and immigration services to the Indonesian diaspora residing in the United States (US). Indonesia releases the Electronic Citizenship Administration System (SAKE) to serve the diaspora.

"The government has an obligation to provide full service and protection to every Indonesian citizen (WNI) under any circumstances, both at home and abroad," said Laoly during a working visit to the US through a written statement received by Antara news agency, in Jakarta, Friday, November 19, 2021.

He said there are about three million Indonesian diasporas in the US, consisting of children of Indonesian citizens, former Indonesian citizens, and children of former Indonesian citizens. Some of them have permanent citizenship status, but some have not. Lack of information related to citizenship services causes some diasporas to have difficulty obtaining Indonesian citizenship status.

"This outreach is important so that Indonesian people who are abroad can obtain information from primary sources," he said.
The Ministry of Law and Human Rights through the Directorate General of General Legal Administration (Ditjen AHU) launches the Electronic Citizenship Administration System (SAKE) which provides citizenship services worldwide. "This SAKE is borderless, no longer has space and time dimensions because applications can be accessed worldwide through www.ahu.go.id," said Laoly.

The Minister of Law and Human Rights also explained about limited dual citizenship which is applied to children from marriages between Indonesian citizens and foreign citizens (WNA). Limited dual citizenship, he continued, has the stipulation that a person must choose one nationality when he or she reaches the age of 18 or it can be extended to 21 years or after marriage. Limited dual citizenship is regulated in Law (UU) Number 12 of 2006 concerning Citizenship.
