TheIndonesia.id - The fisheries sector in North Aceh regency suffered a US$178,570 loss after flood hit the region earlier this month.

The regency’s marine and fisheries office reported that the loss was experienced by fishermen in the sector across five subdistricts.

“The flood happened and created loss in five subdistricts, [as it affected] embankments and ponds owned by fishermen in North Aceh,” office secretary Murzani said on Wednesday, January 26, as reported by Antara.

The office revealed that 707 hectares of embankment and four hectares of cultivation pond owned by local fishers were affected by the flood that first hit the regency at the start of 2022.

In Lhoksukon subdistrict, 85 and 267 hectares of embankment for milkfish and white leg shrimp, respectively, were hit by flood – along with a hectare of catfish pond.

And in Tanas Pasir subdistrict, 65 and 175 hectares of embankment for milkfish and white leg shrimp, respectively, were also affected by flood, while in Syamtalira subdistrict, 20 hectares of milkfish embankment and 40 hectares of white leg shrimp embankment suffered similar damage.

Meanwhile, the flood also hit 25 and 30 hectares of cultivation embankment for milkfish and white leg shrimp in Samudera subdistrict.

Lastly, three one-hectare ponds for catfish, tra catfish, and tilapia cultivation in Langkahan subdistrict were also impacted.

“The loss experienced by the locals include lost and dead seeds, damaged facilities for fisheries production, and destroyed embankments,” Murzani concluded.

The flood hit North Aceh for about a week, and Aceh’s Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD) reported that at least 14 subdistricts were submerged and thousands of people were impacted.
