TheIndonesia.id - The Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for Citarum River in West Java has reached 80 percent completion mark.

During his visit to the site in Bojongsoang subdistrict, Bandung regency, on Tuesday, March 15, Pandajitan said the WWTP is currently 80 percent completed and said the government will continue its development until it can achieve the initial target.

“The visit is part of the Citarum Harum program. From report I’ve received, Citarum River is already 80 percent clean, including related to the flood prevention effort. Only 20 percent more remains,” he revealed.

Citarum Harum is a program to restore the river which was once dubbed the most polluted river in the world. And WWTP is part of the grand plan that ensures the water is completely clean before entering the river.

West Java governor Ridwan Kamil, who was also present during the visit, said the WWTP is beneficial, not only for the people in Bandung municipality, but also for those who live surrounding the area.

“Even though the asset is owned by the municipal government, its benefits are not only for Bandung. [It will] also create benefits for the five regions along the Bandung Basin,” Kamil said.

The five regions are Bandung regency, West Bandung regency, Cimahi municipality, Garut regency, and Sumedang regency.

Coordinating Minister Pandjaitan also revealed that the government is planning to install solar panels above the Cieunteung Retention Lake which is 8.7 hectares wide and Andir Lake which is 4.7 hectares wide.

“[The installation] in these two lakes can generate 100 megawatt and create US$10.4 million worth of carbon credits, and it can be used to power factories located nearby,” he explained.
