TheIndonesia.id - State-owned electricity company PT PLN said it targets 580 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations to be in operation in 2022 to support the mainstreaming of EV across the country.

PLN president director Darmawan Prasodjo said it’s working to build more charging stations, or SPKLU, as the Indonesian government continues to promote the use of EV in Indonesia and build its supporting industries.

“Each year, we will add the number of SPKLU to support the EV ecosystem,” Prasodjo said on Friday, March 18, as reported by Antara.

The realization of EV charging construction in 2021 was at 190 units, and PLN revealed that for this year, it targets 580 units to be ready for use for EV owners in Indonesia.

As of February, there are 267 charging stations across 195 locations, and 120 of them are owned by PLN.

In addition to charging stations, PLN will also speed up construction completion of battery swap stations (BSS) and home charging stations to encourage more people to shift to EV.

According to Prasodjo, in December last year, there were 12,811 electric motorcycles in Indonesia. He said the company fully supports the conversion to electric bikes in an effort to reduce carbon emission. And with excess electricity in PLN currently, the company ensured that it will be able to power EV in Indonesia.

Furthermore, PLN is also offering incentives in the form of discount for EV owners who want to increase electricity power and 30 percent discount for night time electricity consumption.

The Indonesian government targets 13 million units of electric motorcycles and cars by 2030, both new and from conversion program.
