TheIndonesia.id - The United States Ambassador to Indonesia Sung Y Kim is visiting Batam, Riau Islands, to see the construction of maritime training center for Indonesian Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla) at the Fleet Base, which is built as part of bilateral commitment between the two countries on the safeguarding of regional security.

Chief of Bakamla Vice Admiral Aan Kurnia, who joined the visit, said the training center is the implementation of Memorandum of Understanding on Maritime Cooperation agreed by the US and Indonesia on October 24, 2015.

“The memorandum details a number of assistance from the US Coast Guard to Bakamla, especially in capacity and capability enhancement of [Bakamla’s] human resources,” Kurnia said on Wednesday, March 30, as reported by Antara.

During the visit, Ambassador Kim checked the currently-under-construction building that will be appointed as Bakamla’s training center as he reiterated the US’ intention to support Indonesia to safeguard regional security and keep peace in the region.

“This is part of the US’ continuous effort in partnering with Indonesia to fight transnational crime that includes the procurement of equipment, support, training, and technical aids to Bakamla since it was first established in 2014,” he said.

The US$3.5 million training center is the fruit of collaboration between Indonesian and the US coast guards, the US Embassy International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) office, Joint Interagency Task Force West, U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, and the US Naval Facilities Engineering Command.
