TheIndonesia.id - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued early warning for potential land and forest fires in 11 cities and regencies in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province.
According to the El Tari Kupang Meteorology Station, the 11 areas in NTT that need to beware of the potential fires are the city of Kupang as well as Kupang, North Timor Tengah, Belu, Rote Ndao, Sabu Raijua, East Sumba, Central Sumba, Alor, Lembata, and East Flores regencies.
As reported by Antara, head of the station Agung Sudiono Abadi said that weeds and leaves that usually cover the forest floors in the aforementioned areas are usually very dry and highly flammable – which can cause land and forest fires.
He also warned the public against doing any activities that can further trigger fires, such as starting fire to open land for agriculture or farming as well as throwing cigarettes butts onto the forest floors.
Abadi lastly warned that strong winds may also contribute to the forest and land fires quickly spreading and being difficult to put out.
