TheIndonesia.id - Starting in 2022, the University of Indonesia (UI) GreenCityMetric has made a new breakthrough by providing an assessment of the best sustainable districts/ cities in Indonesia. Previously, UI only carried out the GreenMetric World University Rankings for 12 years to assess the greenest universities in the world.

Head of UI GreenMetric Prof. Dr. Ir. Riri Fitri Sari said that the first GreenMetric city/ district ranking in Indonesia is based on three pillars, namely the Environment, Economics, and Social, with a weighted assessment indicator consisting of Spatial Planning and Infrastructure (16 percent). Next are Energy and Climate Change (19 percent), Waste and Waste Management (19 percent), Water Management (15 percent), Access and Mobility (16 percent), and Governance (15 percent).

As a result, the three best sustainable cities in Indonesia are, the first best, Semarang City, Central Java; second best Kediri City, East Java; and third best Padang City, West Sumatra. Mayor of Semarang City, Hendrar Prihadi; Mayor of Kediri Abdullah Abu Bakar; and The Mayor of Padang City, Hendri Septa, received the award directly.

As the winner of the best Sustainable City, the hallmark of Semarang is the wastewater treatment process using Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) which is similar to the Activated Sludge process but with a mixture of suspended media. In addition, organic waste processing in Semarang City has been processed into compost using barrels, tubs, Takakura, bio pores as well as eco enzymes.

Meanwhile, the City of Kediri is the best in terms of access and mobility by providing public transportation specifically for the elderly and disabled as well as the availability of bicycle lanes on the road.

As the third best city, Padang City is the city that excels in the field of water management, various programs for water conservation, and the use of recycled water.

In addition to these three best sustainable regions in Indonesia, UI GreenCityMetric also gave six awards for the best districts/ cities in each category of assessment. First, the award for the Most Sustainable City in the Field of Spatial Planning and Infrastructure was given to the City of Semarang, Central Java.

UI GreenCityMetric is an initiative of UI GreenMetric, which will rank districts/cities in Indonesia based on commitments and actions or actions taken by districts/cities towards sustainability.
