TheIndonesia.id - An Afghan refugee set himself on fire in front of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office in Medan as a protest to demand certainty after years in transit country.

22-year-old Ahmad Shah stood outside Forum Nine building in North Sumatra’s capital, before dousing himself in gasoline and setting it on fire at about 10 a.m. local time, Tuesday, November 30, 2021.

“He poured gasoline on his body and burn himself using a lighter,” representative for the refugees Zuma Mohsini said.

A few other refugees reportedly tried to prevent him from the self-immolation act, but to no avail.

Nearby security officers quickly set off the fire, and Shah is currently being treated in Siloam Hospital in Medan. Mohsini confirmed that Shah suffers from 75 percent of burn injuries.

He also explained that Shah has been suffering from stress and depression since landing in Indonesia as a transit country in 2015.

Other refugee Ale said he and other refugees hope to be able to leave Indonesia soon and to be resettled in a third country.

“We no longer want to be here; we’re like animals here because we are only able to sleep and eat. We like it here [Medan], but we also need to find work. We’re not even allowed to travel,” he said.

A group of refugees has been sleeping outside the UNHCR’s office in Medan in the last two weeks, but they haven’t been able to meet and talk to any representative from the international organization. It’s reported that there have been 14 suicides among refugees in Medan.
