TheIndonesia.id - Indonesia President Joko Widodo and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong are scheduled to meet for a leaders’ retreat in Bintan, Riau, on Tuesday, January 25, where the leaders will discuss current affairs between the two countries.

Director of Southeast Asia at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mirza Nurhidayat said the meeting seeks to strengthen bilateral relations and enhance cooperation between Singapore and Indonesia.

“The leaders’ meeting is a cooperation modality between the two countries, and it will discuss all things related to the enhancement of bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Singapore,” Nurhidayat said on Thursday, January 20, as reported by Antara.

He added that cooperation on health sector will potentially be discussed in the meeting, as the world continues its fight against COVID-19 pandemic – in addition to other strategic issues between the neighboring countries.

President Widodo and PM Lee are also expected to continue discussion on the control of Flight Information Region, or FIR, which is currently managed by Singapore. The Indonesian government has expressed the intention and started the move to take over the FIR above Riau Islands, with deputy for coordination of maritime sovereignty and energy at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment Basilio Dias Araujo citing earlier this month that Indonesia now possesses the capacity to manage the FIR.

The leaders’ retreat was initially planned for 2020, but it was inevitably postponed due to the pandemic. Nurhidayat said preparation for the leaders’ retreat continues between ministries and state agencies.
